Within the next month, you should be able to wash your popcorn down with a beer from the The Carmike Galleria 6 in Mt. Lebanon.

The six-screen theater has applied for a license from the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board to sell beer and wine, according to the state website. Approval is expected in the next 30 days, said attorney Mark Flaherty of Pittsburgh, who represents the cinema.

“All staff will be trained in responsible alcoholic beverage service,” Flaherty said via email.

Management of the Galleria theater declined comment and referred calls to Carmike Cinemas Inc., based in Columbus, Ga. Officials from Carmike could not be reached for comment.

Theater management will also be trained in the PLCB’s Responsible Alcohol Management Program, which involves training on how to detect fake IDs and recognize someone who is intoxicated, Flaherty said.

Selling beer and wine – even hard liquor – is a growing trend at movie theaters across the country and in Pittsburgh. The Manor Theater in Squirrel Hill and the Loew’s multiplex at The Waterfront are two example of local theaters that have alcohol on their menus.

One of the nation’s largest movie chains, AMC Theatres, for example, has placed a bar and lounge – dubbed Macguffins – in some of its cinemas. Macguffins, according to the AMC website, serves cocktails and beer.

The Carmike Galleria reopened last April after being closed for renovations. Premium stadium seating complete with oversized, high-back luxury seats with retractable arm rests were added, according to a Carmike press release. Multiple concession areas featuring Coca-Cola Freestyle drink centers were also added, the release said.
