A motorist driving along Turkeyfoot Road in Peters Township early the morning of Jan. 23 helped rescue a man from his burning home.

The driver noticed the fire at the front of 380 Turkeyfoot Road about 4:45 a.m. and called 911 before knocking on a rear door to alert the sleeping resident, Peters Township Assistant Fire Chief Bill Gaughan said.

Peters Township Police Chief Harry Fruecht identified the resident as 46-year-old Christopher Casteel.

Casteel was not injured in the fire, and the identity of the motorist is unknown.

Gaughan said they were able to control the fire quickly, but not before it damaged the front of the single-story house with smoke damage in the rest of the structure.

Peter Township firefighters were assisted at the scene by crews from North Strabane, Washington and Houston.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
