Board vice president Mary Birks listens as superintendent Dr. Timothy Steinhauer talks about the 2015 graduating class before approving lunch price increases.

The Mt. Lebanon school board approved promoting Kelly Szesterniak to principal of Jefferson Middle School after serving as Hoover Elementary principal since January 2014. The board also approved increasing meal prices at each tier level for both breakfast and lunch at the regular June 15 meeting.

The board approved raising “gourmet,” or tier three, lunches by 25 cents to $3.25 at the high school. All other meals – including both primary and secondary school breakfasts – increased by 10 cents, making breakfast $1.60. New prices for elementary lunch will be $2.20, while at the high school, a regular lunch will cost $2.35; the middle-tier “premium” lunch will cost $2.70.

The board explained at its June 8 discussion meeting that next year’s budget stipulated under federal guidelines that the district is 21 cents below required meal prices based on subsidized meals, which will not be impacted by any price increase, so increases had to be made to keep in line with the federal program.

The board also announced that the July 20 joint discussion and voting meeting would be preceded by a construction update at 7:00 p.m. in the large group instruction room D 205.
