Roads, summer help on the agenda in Scott Twp.

By Terry Kish 3 min read

Decisions on roadway improvement projects and summer help were just a few signs that summer will soon be here during the Scott Township Commissioners’ April 28 regular meeting.

In an 8-0 vote with Commissioner Pat Caruso abstaining, the board awarded the contract for the township’s 2015 roadway improvement project to Peter J. Caruso & Sons, Inc. Caruso’s base bid total was the low bid at $808,997.50, and included a bid for a Spreading Oak Drive storm sewer for $95,065, which will come out of bond money. The paving total of $713,932.50 will come out of the general fund.

Since the paving total was less than the $780,000 budgeted for roadway improvements, board members are reviewing additional areas that can be paved this year. The commissioners are expected to discuss additional road improvement options at the May 12 agenda meeting.

Related to the roadways improvement program, the board authorized the township engineer to prepare bid specs and advertise bids for the 2015 ACO repairs CCTV work and for sanitary sewer repair associated with the 2015 roadway improvement program.

The board also granted preliminary and final approval to Wendy’s Land Development Plan at 1600 Cochran Road. Scott’s planning commission made favorable recommendations for referral to the board of commissioners at the April 1 meeting, and the lead architect on the project addressed the board at the April 14 agenda meeting. Plans are underway to demolish the current restaurant and build a new one on the existing site by the end of 2015.

The board unanimously voted to advertise the township’s zoning ordinance and to advertise a hearing on May 26 at 7 p.m. before the board of commissioners on adoption of the zoning ordinance. The board also ratified approval of a mailing which notified all township property owners about the adoption of the zoning ordinance.

In other business, the board approved hiring Christopher Salerno, Robert Hilpert and Patrick Malcolm as public works summer employees. Candidates for the other six open positions will be filled as applications are received.

Under parks and recreation, hired for the 2015 season were: Ron Ellis to supervise all activities ($3,800), Monica Gigliotti as pool manager ($6,800), Renee Landly as assistant pool manager ($6,200), William Evans as recreation director ($3,500), and cashiers, pool pass salesperson, water aerobics instructors and lifeguards. The board also approved the hiring of an assistant director ($1,850) and two grade supervisors ($1,000 each) for the summer recreation program.

The board also decided to open sales of pool passes to all communities at the non-resident rate. Pricing is listed on the township’s website at www.scott-twp.com.
