A fire inside one of the Valleyfield Apartment units at 3520 Washington Pike in South Fayette left an 80-year-old man dead and his wife hospitalized.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner identified the man as Albert Camburn. South Fayette police Chief John Phoennik said the man’s wife, Wanda, was taken to St. Clair Hospital for treatment from smoke inhalation after the fire broke out around 7:40 p.m. May 27. Hospital spokesman Bob Crytzer said Mrs. Camburn was treated and released overnight.

Nearby residents said there was so much smoke that the Fairview Fire Department and others had to use sledgehammers to bust down neighboring apartments’ walls to reach the victim. Allegheny County Fire Marshall Chief Alvin Henderson said the fire started in a laundry room and damaged three other units. He said he doesn’t believe the fire is suspicious and is still working on an exact cause.
