Serve2Cure charity tennis tournament to benefit breast cancer awareness

Serve2Cure, a Mt. Lebanon nonprofit that raises money for cancer research through tennis events, will be holding a three-day tournament Sept. 18-20 at the Mt. Lebanon Tennis Center on Cedar Boulevard to benefit the Young Women’s Breast Cancer Foundation of Peters Township.
The charity tennis tournament, now in its fifth year, has donated more than $66,000 to Gilda’s Club of Western Pennsylvania and the American Cancer Society since its inception.
Margaret Izzo, a spokesperson for Serve2Cure, said the Peters foundation was chosen to draw attention to the fact that women in their 30s and 40s can get breast cancer. The disease is the second-leading cause of death for women and there are more than 40,000 deaths each year in the U.S. from breast cancer, according to the Susan G. Komen foundation.
Young Women’s Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation’s mission is to promote breast cancer awareness in women 40 and younger, provide financial grants to the newly diagnosed, and to educate the public.
More than 100 people are expected to participate in Serve2Cure’s tournament, Izzo said. The event includes men’s doubles, women’s doubles, mixed doubles, senior doubles and senior mixed doubles and junior doubles for people 18 and younger. Players are allowed to participate in two events, Izzo said. Registration is $75 for adults and $45 for juniors, she said.
In addition to tennis matches, the event will include cardio tennis classes, themed raffle baskets and silent auction items. People can also clock the speed of their tennis serve.
