Car crashes into Dormont Library
A Sheridan man crashed his vehicle into the front of the Dormont Public Library between 5 and 6 a.m. Sept. 11, causing structural damage and forcing it to close for the day.
According to Dormont Borough police, they received a call in the early hours about a man sleeping in his vehicle parked in front of Dunkin’ Donuts on West Liberty Avenue, located directly across the street from the library. Sgt. Jim Briglia of the Dormont police said by the time police arrived, the vehicle – a Volkswagon Rabbit – had crashed into the front of the library, taking out a parking meter in the process.
Police arrested Jason Wilson, 26, of Sheridan. Wilson, who was not injured, was taken to St. Clair Hospital for a blood test. The results of the test will determine what kind of charges will be filed, Briglia said.
Cindy D’Agostino, director of the Dormont library, said no one was in the building at the time of the accident. She said she learned of the incident from an employee who had come to work early.
The library, however, had to be closed for the day because there was damage to the front facade and a pane-glass window was cracked. The impact of the crash also damaged the library’s drywall, knocking books off shelves.
D’Agostino said she is getting a structural engineer in to look at the building, but anticipates being opened Saturday, Sept. 12.
