Peters Township council will hold a public hearing Oct. 26 on a liquor license transfer request by Heisler’s Market of McMurray.

According to documents filed with the township, McMurray Foods Inc., which does business as Heisler’s, wants to open a restaurant next to its existing market on East McMurray Road. And, Heisler’s owners want to be able to sell beer for consumption in the restaurant, as well as to go. The owners also said at some future date they may sell wine for consumption in the restaurant, which would have a seating capacity of at least 30.

In other business at the Sept. 28 meeting, the developer of the proposed Dunkin’ Donuts on Washington Road was given a needed variance by council, a move that puts the project a step closer toward becoming reality.

The variance will give project developer Pitt RE LLC the right to construct a retaining wall slightly more than 28 inches higher – on its southern end – than the six feet allowed by the township. Pitt RE LLC wants to construct a doughnut shop where the existing Washington Road Eat’n Park is now located. That restaurant will be relocated further up Washington Road and become the anchor retail tenant of the $4 million Peters Township Marketplace now under construction at the Hidden Valley Road intersection.

Michael Orie of Pitt RE LLC said he is hopeful of opening a Peters location sometime next year.

“We are doing the best we can to open a Dunkin’ Donuts,” he said.

The project, however, is facing a legal challenge. Daniel and Joyce Wallach of Oakhurst Drive own 3.5 acres, zoned single-family residential, located behind and beside the Eat ‘n Park, which has been at that location for more than 40 years. The Wallachs have asked Washington County to review a decision made in August by Peters zoning board that gave developers needed variances.

Council also approved plans by the McMurray Rotary Club, which celebrated its Golden Anniversary in June, to construct and donate a plaza at the intersection of Valley Brook and East McMurray roads.

The plaza, which has been tentatively dubbed Rotary Club Plaza, will have some green space and a bench where people can meet to take a walk, get coffee, or shop nearby. The club is hoping to fund the project through donations and sponsorships of plaques or medallions at the site.
