South Fayette Township Library to remain closed through mid-September
South Fayette Township Library on Millers Run Road will remain closed through mid-September to be refurbished and reconfigured to make it more comfortable and user-friendly for patrons.
The library, which shares space with township municipal offices and police department, closed July 27 when heavy rains caused the drain in one of the library’s restrooms to back up and flow into the library. The rest of the building has remained open since the incident.
“What started as a little repair project has turned into an amazing opportunity to renovate the library,” said Cheryl Napsha, library director.
Because the carpet was damaged, new flooring will be installed, said Andrea Iglar, township community development director. The township will add new seating and reconfigure the space, which formerly housed the municipality’s public works department.
Rather than keep its current 20,000-item collection, which was not damaged by the flooding, the library will instead focus on new releases and other popular materials, Iglar said. The library is not moving its entire collection.
Some items will be kept in storage until the library has a larger space that can accommodate more shelving and materials, said Napsha. No timeline has been set for that. Other items will be donated to the Friends of the Library for its fall book sale.
A definitive reopening date has not yet been set. In the interim, library patrons are being directed to Bridgeville Public Library, which has had an operating agreement with South Fayette since 2013. Napsha is the director of both libraries.
Library materials should not be returned to the South Fayette library during the closure. They can be returned to Bridgeville or any other public library in Allegheny County. If you can’t make it to another library, fines will be waived until the items can be returned to South Fayette library when it reopens.
Many of the programs held at the township library will be held at the Bridgeville library. For updated information, call 412-221-3737, or visit www.southfayettelibrary.org.
