Township manager Mike Silvestri uses a megaphone to call prize-winning children during the 2013 fishing derby.

The annual Peters Township Fishing Derby for kids in kindergarten through fifth grade is scheduled for Aug. 20 at Peters Lake Park.

The event, now in its 16th year, annually attracts 100-plus junior anglers who compete for a myriad of prizes donated by the township and McMurray Rotary Club.

Prizes are given for the largest fish and smallest fish, as well as to the children who catch the first fish and the most fish. Smaller prizes are awarded to kids for participating, too.

Township manager Michael Silvestri, a McMurray Rotarian and started the derby to promote Peters Lake, guarantees there will be plenty of fish for the kids to catch.

“We always throw the fish back in after they’re caught,” he said.

Members of the club, along with township parks and recreation department staff members and volunteers, take care of that responsibility, along with measuring the fish and making sure that hooks are extracted safely from their mouths.

The derby will start at 10 a.m. and continue until noon. The entry cost is $5 for Peters residents and $10 for nonresidents. Pre-registration for the derby is suggested.
