Bad roads force Peters Township School District to cancel school

Winter raised its ugly head Tuesday and the Peters Township School District responded by canceling school for its 4,300 students because of unsafe road conditions.
The closure will push the last day of school back another day until June 23, said Shelly Belcher, district spokesperson. Peters Township High School seniors are still scheduled to graduate June 10.
District officials said in December that it will appeal to the state about having to make up any snow days.
The district’s 285 teachers returned to work the day after Thanksgiving, but have been working without a contract since late August, when school began.
The Peters Township Federation of Teachers and the district are in the process of going through nonbinding arbitration. The major differences between the two are salaries and health care costs.
It is expected proposals from both sides will be made public Friday, Feb. 19 and the public will have the opportunity to comment.
If no agreement is reached, it is possible a second work stoppage may occur. That strike, by law, can be for no more than six days because the district must get in 180 days of construction.
