It looks like you’re going to have to wait a little longer for the Whole Foods grocery store in Upper St. Clair to open.

Adam Benigni, the township’s director of planning and community development, said work on the 40,000-square-foot store is behind schedule. Developers are unsure of when the organic grocer will open. Initial projections were set for Thanksgiving, but the contractor is now set to turn the unit over to Whole Foods by Dec. 5. “I’m unsure about how long from that date it will take Whole Foods to open,” said Benigni, “but it could be by the new year.”

The store, located across Route 19 from South Hills Village Mall, will be the Austin, Texas-based grocery chain’s third store in the Greater Pittsburgh area. A reqeust has been made for a 950-square-foot outdoor dining area at the store.

Whole Foods also is serving as the cornerstone of the Siena at Clair retail and residential development now under construction on the former Consol Energy headquarters site.

Besides Whole Foods, plans call for the construction of upscale retail and restaurants, and 33 residential units. Work has not started on that portion of the project, Benigni said.

Benigni said Upper St. Clair officials are expected to issue a building permit this week for The Porch, a restaurant developed by the Eat’n Park Hospitality Group and planned for the Siena development. The restaurant bills itself as a neighborhood eatery with a menu that includes items like specialty salads and pizzas, burgers and soup, all with an emphasis on fresh food.

Eat’n Park is also developing a Hello Bistro restaurant at the site. Hello Bistro is described as “a casual street-front restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, where guests can choose between an innovative salad bar, grilled-to-order burgers and select sandwiches.”
