The Allegheny Health Network Sports Complex at Cool Springs totals 169,000 square feet.

The new Allegheny Health Network Sports Complex at Cool Springs in Bethel Park was officially unveiled March 14, erasing the facility’s past as a former miniature golf and driving range that sat idle for years.

The state-of-the-art, 169,000 square-foot complex features three partitioned 115 by 182-foot, multi-purpose turfed fields that can combine into one professional-size soccer field, two regulation-size hardwood basketball courts and four volleyball courts.

The facility houses a variety of exercise equipment and machines designed for wellness and to improve the performance of athletes. In addition, it has a number of Allegheny Health Network orthopaedic and sports medicine services that includes advanced, individualized strength training, physical therapy, sports nutrition and sports medicine services.

“Allegheny Health Network’s orthopaedics and sports medicine programs aim to help athletes of all levels and ages build strength, reduce the risk for injury and excel at their sport,” said Patrick DeMeo, chairman of the Allegheny Heath’s Orthopaedic Institute and medical director of the Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Organization, during the opening festivities. “This amazing facility further improves our ability to provide a high level of care and service to patients in the South Hills, as well as those who travel into the community to access it.”

According to Allegheny Health Network, programs offered at Cool Springs follow proven, industry-leading protocols that are supported by technologies including an Alter-G anti-gravity treadmill, the Dynavision Reaction Board light-training device, which helps improve reaction times, as well as a Makoto Functional Arena, a 360-degree, multi-planar simulator that provides a close approximation to real-time sports activities. Lastly, Cools Springs has a Cryo-Sauna, which is a chamber designed to rapidly cool the body and help with muscle recovery following a workout.

The sports complex is the second phase of a redevelopment project that began in 2013 when Penn Cove Group, a South Hills development company, bought Cool Springs with the goal of converting it into a sports facility that serves a variety of athletes. The first phase of the project opened in July 2014 and features a fully-turfed, two-story golf driving range, an 18-hole miniature golf course, state-of-the-art golf simulation rooms, a restaurant and pro shop.
