The Mt. Lebanon School District is planning to discipline a student who inscribed a swastika into the mulch outside Washington Elementary School on Oct. 12.

The sixth-grade student at Mellon Middle School, who confessed after an investigation performed by school officials, scrawled the image that circulated on social media, ultimately alerting the district. Mellon Middle School is located next to Washington Elementary.

“After an immediate and thorough investigation, the sixth-grade student responsible for creating this image admitted responsibility to the Mellon Middle School administration,” Mt. Lebanon School District superintendent Dr. Timothy Steinhauer wrote in a letter sent to parents Nov. 23. “The Mt. Lebanon Police Department was notified and other appropriate actions will ensue.”

Steinhauer also said the district has zero tolerance for discrimination in its schools.

“Have no doubt that we are committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all of our students,” Steinhauer wrote. “We have and will continue to act swiftly to address any issues that are offensive in accordance with our longstanding history, policies and practices of nondiscrimination.”

The mark was not permanent and has since been removed from the premises. School officials did not identify the student or say what punishment that person might face.
