Anna Komer and Alex Garcia from Peters Township combined for fourth place during the WPIAL Class AAA girls’ doubles tennis championships. The pair placed one spot short of qualifying for the PIAA finals after dropping a 6-3, 7-5 decision to Shady Side Academy’s Devin and Erin Gramley in the consolation match.

Komer and Garcia reached the Final Four in the tournament but lost to eventual champions, Amanda Nord and Charlotte James of Fox Chapel, in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-1. Nord and James defeated North Allegheny’s duo of Tina Li and Ashley Huang, 6-2, 6-4, in the finals to claim the District 7 title.

To reach the semifinals, Komer and Garcia dispatched Oakland Catholic’s Giovanna Elo and Caroline Ciocco, 10-5, and Hempfield’s Maura Sackett and Annie Iezzi, 10-2, in the opening rounds of tournament play.

Earlier in the week, Komer and Gracia captured the Section 4 title. The pair defeated Montour’s Isabela Paixao and Mercady Hazlett, 6-0, 7-5, for the championship.

Mt. Lebanon’s foursome of Morgan Happe, Katherine Izzo, Skylar Morgan and Golda Gershanock qualified for the WPIAL championships by earning the third and fourth-place berths out of Section 4. Happe and Izzo outlasted Morgan and Gershanock, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, in the consolation finals.

During the WPIAL tournament, Morgan and Gershanock won their first match against SSA’s Kirsten Kann and Keegan Yaccino, 10-6, before succumbing to Li and Huang, 10-4, in the quarterfinals. Happe and Izzo lost their first-round match to Ericka Wojcikiewicz and Amelia Haley of Mars, 10-2.

Other area tandems competing in the sectional included: Katie and Nikkie Wozny as well as Grace Majestic and Jill Girardi from Canon-McMillan; Allie D’orazio and Carla Godsmith from Peters Township; Michelle Waters and Gabby Grayson as well as Kara Joseph and Bailey Edeburn from Chartiers Valley; and Upper St. Clair’s foursome of Lauren Piecknick and Shamalee Joshi as well as Averrey Jencka and Fallon Winseck.
