A gas leak in Peters Township caused residents to evacuate their homes Friday afternoon.

Students at Peters Township School District who were impacted by the gas leak remained at the schools until a parent or guardian picked them up.

According to Peters Township Fire Department, a section of Jonathan Drive was closed as crews waited for Columbia Gas crews to arrive.

The leak was caused by a landscaping contrator who struck a gas line near 132 Jonathan Drive.

There were no calls for emergency medical services.

Dr. Jeannine French, Superintendent at Peters Township, said some students from the middle school and Pleasant Valley Elementary School were kept at the schools until their parents were notified and arrived at the school to pick them up.

By 5 p.m., all students had been picked up.

“The township did a great job of notifying us about the gas leak, and our transportation director and staff looked at the students who might be affected, and we decided to hold them here,” she said.

Columbia Gas could not be reached for comment.
