Two scholarships of $1,000 each were recently awarded to two Baptist Homes Society (BHS) PRN (casual) dining services employees for their pursuit of higher education. The recipients were selected by committee from a competitive pool of qualified applicants from both Baptist Homes and Providence Point.

Martha Smee has been in dining services at Baptist Homes since April 2016. She attended Mt. Lebanon High School and is currently a freshman at the University of Pittsburgh, where she is studying pre-med/biology.

Candice Coughenour, a dining service employee at Providence Point, has been on the staff since January 2012. Coughenour is from the Pittsburgh area and attended Chartiers Valley High School. She is now a student at Seton Hill University, focusing on a graduate degree in family psychology.

The scholarship was created two years ago by Providence Point residents Jan and Jeanette Smith who endowed $50,000 in order to create and fund the BHS PRN Dining Services Staff Scholarship and give back to the outstanding employees in the dining services departments. However, individual donors are funding the annual grants until the endowment takes effect.

This year, through the generosity of Miller Consulting, a local development firm, BHS was able to present the award to these two students. In addition to this scholarship, BHS offers full and part-time employees tuition reimbursement programs of up to $5,250 and $2,500, per fiscal year, respectively.
