Barbeque

The Bethel Park Lions will hold its inaugural barbeque from 4 to 7 p.m. July 13, at Lions Park on Irishtown Road. Dinner includes a pulled pork sandwich, 1/4 of a chicken, five-bean baked beans, red skin potato salad and drink for $12 per person (no substitutions). Rita’s Italian Ice will be available for purchase. All proceeds benefit Lions Charities and used for maintenance of Bethel Lions Park. Bring unwanted eyeglasses to be donated to the needy. Donations needed

Friends of Family Hospice & Palliative Care is seeking donations for its fifth annual Family Treasures Sale to be held in October. The desired good quality, gently-used or new donations include: jewelry, collectibles, purses and wallets, china and glassware, picture frames, mirrors, lamps, books, CDs and DVDs (no VHS), holiday decor, artwork, kitchen items, craft items, linens, and furniture (no large bookcases or large entertainment centers). Auditions

Resonance Works Pittsburgh will hold auditions for chorus and small roles for the 2018-2019 season. Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation offers the following tours:

• Free tours at the Old Allegheny County Jail Museum, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays, July 9, 16, 23 and 30. Tours take 30 minutes, with the last tour leaving at 12:30. Reservations are not required, but appreciated.

• Downtown’s Best Walking Tour, 9:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Thursdays, July 12, 19 and 26. Cost of $20 per person includes a guidebook. Advance paid reservations are required.

• Free Friday Walking Tour: Oakland Civic Center/Forbes Avenue area, 10 to 11 a.m. July 13, 20 and 27. Meet at the corner of Forbes Avenue and Schenley Drive Extention, near the dinosaur statue. Tour ends outside of Heinz Memorial Chapel.

Free concert

The Bethel Park Community Foundation will host the opening concert of the 2018 Dean Streator Tower Concert Series at 2:30 p.m. July 8, at the Bethel Park Community Center. The concert will feature Community Band South directed by Jim Bennett and Max Gonano. Admission is free, but donations are accepted to benefit Bethel Park Community Foundation.

Theatre class/show

Alabaster Children’s Theatre summer musical theatre class and show has begun rehearsals at St. David’s Church, 905 E. McMurray Road, Venetia. Classes are from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays, through Aug. 6. Bus trip

Whiskey Rebellion Day

Join the soldiers of Wayne’s 4th Sub-Legion on July 15, as they drill for Whiskey Rebellion Day at Woodville Plantation, 1375 Washington Pike, Bridgeville. Activities will include a flag raising ceremony at 1 p.m., School of the Soldier at 1:15, Trooping the Legion at 2:30, 1st Day’s Battle at 3, 2nd Day’s Battle at 3:45, Musket Firing Exhibition at 4 and flag lowering and military tattoo at 5. • Haydn and His Music, 10 a.m. Fridays, July 6-Aug. 17 (no class July 20). Dr. Cleon Cornes will present an overview of the life of Franz Joseph Haydn, the Austrian composer of the Classical era whose influence on his contemporaries and later composers was immense. The class includes music and video.

• Stardust Swing: Pre-Tour Garden Party, 7 p.m. July 7, in the library’s garden. There will be entertainment by a live jazz band, dessert buffet, Betsy’s Ice Cream, cocktails and wine. • 28th Annual Garden Tour, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 8. This self-guided tour features nine diverse Mt. Lebanon gardens, including the library’s own garden, which the National Wildlife Federation certified as a Wildlife Habitat. This year, the Mt. Lebanon Arboretum and Mt. Lebanon Nature Conservancy will be included along with three next-door neighbors in Mainline and two neighbors on Longridge. After touring the library’s garden, stop at the library’s perennial sale. The plants, donated from local gardens, are appropriate for Western Pennsylvania growing conditions in and offered at discount prices. Master Gardeners and a Pittsburgh Rose Society Consulting Rosarian will offer free consultations. New this year will be food trucks in the library’s upper parking lot. • Pittsburgh 300 Million Years Ago: A Geological History, 7 p.m. July 9. Dr. Charles Jones from the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Geology and Environmental Science will host an in-depth look at Pittsburgh’s early history, and discuss the daily life of a geologist and what they investigate today.

• Rock your Denim with Needle Felting, 1 and 7 p.m. July 10, for ages 11 and up (no one under age 11 will be allowed in the program room). Fiber artist Judé Ernest will help you add needle felted surface embellishments to a denim garment or piece of fabric. Acrylic painting
