What’s Happening: Week of May 5
Glass recycling
Pennsylvania Resources Council will host three “pop-up” glass recycling collection events in May in response to the sudden removal of glass from many of the region’s residential curbside recycling programs.
The events will take place 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 4 at Peters Township Middle School; May 11 at Village Square Mall, sponsored by Township of Upper St. Clair; May 18 at Collier Township Municipal Building.
Since launching in early March, the pop-up glass campaign has attracted more than 1,500 participants and arranged for the recycling of 23 tons of glass.
PRC’s network is sponsored by CAP Glass, Owens Illinois and Straub Brewery in conjunction with several local municipalities impacted by recent changes in curbside recycling regulations.
PRC will host additional glass collections in June and July.

Jewish history program
Eric Lidji, director of the Rauh Jewish History Program and Archives at the Heinz History Center, will present “The Jewish History of Western Pennsylvania: 1838-1938” at 7 p.m. May 8 at Mt. Lebanon Public Library
Lidji is the curator of its website Generation to Generation, which profiles Jewish families and communities throughout Western Pennsylvania, a co-editor of the book “Her Deeds Sing Her Praises: Profiles of Pittsburgh Jewish Women, and author of “The Seventeenth Generation: The Lifework of Rabbi Walter Jacob.” The program is presented by the Historical Society of Mt. Lebanon.
Pittsburgh Rose Society
The Pittsburgh Rose Society will be hold a meeting at 1:30 p.m. May 10 in the multipurpose room of Upper St. Clair Township Library, 1820 McLaughlin Run Road.
Guest speaker will be Andy Amrhein, KDKA’s Hardware Guy and owner of Evey’s True Value Hardware in Bethel Park. He is a regular guest speaker on KDKA’s “Pittsburgh Live Today” and is the voice of “Saturday Morning True Value Home Improvement Hour.” He will discuss what is new in the gardening equipment world and answer all garden supply and tool questions.

Post Office seminar
Select Western Pennsylvania District post offices will host seminars to help small businesses learn about the products and services offered by the Postal Service designed to help their business prosper.
Seminars have been designed to afford the opportunity to network and gain marketing insights.
The Bethel Park Post Office, 2765 South Park Road, will host a seminar from 1 to 3 p.m. May 7.
Giant Oaks Garden Club
Giant Oaks Garden Club will meet at 11 a.m. May 2 for its monthly Luncheon and program at St David’s Episcopal Church, 905 E. McMurray Road in Peters Township
Claire Schuchman, a Phipps master gardener and author, will speak about an organic and sustainable approach to gardening that works with nature and low maintenance.

Divorce workshop
A divorce workshop for women will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 8 at Southminster Presbyterian Church, 799 Washington Road in Mt. Lebanon.
The four-hour workshop will explore the legal, financial, and emotional issues of divorce to educate on what to expect and how to prepare. Attendees will gain a greater understanding of how to get through the divorce process with the least amount of cost, conflict and collateral damage.

Life After Addiction
The Substance Addiction Ministry of St. Louise de Marillac Church is hosting a presentation on May 7 at 7 p.m. in LeGras Hall, 320 McMurray Road, Upper St. Clair, called “Life After Addiction: A Journey of Healing and Hope”.
The speaker is William McCabe, who has been in recovery for 30 years. During his addiction, he became “homeless, unemployable, and was physically dying”; now, he is the CEO of Silver Pines Treatment Center in Mahanoy City and has dedicated his life to helping those with chemical dependency, as well as their family members and loved ones.

Church garage sale
Lakeview Christian Life Church will hold its 40th annual “Best Ever Garage Sale” from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 4 at the church, One Lakeview Place, off Morganza Road, Cecil Township. Summer Dance Camps
Spencer Family Y, Bethel Park, will offer the following dance camps:
• Prince and Princess Dance Camp for children ages 3-5 includes a dance class, craft and time for a snack from home, plus a creative play. Session I runs June 17 and 24; Session II runs July 11 and 18. Both sessions are from 10:30 a.m. to noon and are $30 per session.
• Swan Lake Camp for ages 6-12 will teach students ballet, jazz and character dances. A craft of tutu construction will also be part of this camp. Session I runs June 20 and 27; Session II runs July 11 and 18. Both sessions are from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and are $40 per session. Space is limited. Manners, Tea and Me etiquette program for children in kindergarten through second grade will be held at 7 p.m. May 15. Nutrition series
Whole Food Plant-Based Nutrition Series will be offered from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays, May 1, 8 and 15, at Westminster Recreation & Outreach Center located at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Upper St. Clair. Golf Outing
Tri-Community South EMS will hold its 22nd Annual Golf Outing May 23 at Lindenwood Golf Club, McMurray. Proceeds of the event supports its CPR Training Center. The training center has trained over 16,000 individuals a year in CPR, first-aid/AED, and Stop the Bleed programs as well as community education and scouting programs.
Fort Couch presents ‘Joseph’
Fort Couch Middle School will present the musical “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” at 7:30 p.m. May 10 and 11, and 2:30 p.m. May 12, in the Upper St. Clair High School theater.
Tickets can be purchased online at usctheater.org. The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for students. Seating is reserved. Tickets also will be available at the door prior to each performance.
Told entirely through song with the help of a narrator, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” follows the story of Jacob’s favorite son, Joseph, and his 11 brothers. After being sold into slavery by the brothers, Jospeh ingratiates himself with Egyptian noble Potiphar, but ends up in jail after refusing the advances of Potiphar’s wife.
While imprisoned, Joseph discovers his ability to interpret dreams, and he soon finds himself in front of the mighty but troubled showman, the Pharaoh. As Joseph strives to resolve Egypt’s famine, he becomes Pharaoh’s right-hand man and eventually reunites with his family.
South Hills Coin Club

Opioid program
Upper St. Clair Youth Steering Committee will present “Bryan’s Story: Learning about the Opioid Epidemic from a Family Who Lived it” at 7 p.m. May 8 at the Community and Recreation Center at Boyce Mayview Park.
The program addresses the dangers of prescription painkillers and heroin.
Each year, every Upper St. Clair eighth-grader at Fort Couch Middle School participates in a lesson delivered by guidance counselor Jace Palmer and Mike Burch, a community member who lost his son Bryan to a heroin overdose.
The program is free and open to the public.
The Youth Steering Committee of Upper St. Clair is a community action group, jointly appointed by the township commissioners and the school board. Its mission is to involve the Upper St. Clair community in providing positive direction and support to the community’s youth and their families.
Senior luncheon, movie
A senior luncheon and movie matinee is scheduled for May 14 in Room A of the Mt. Lebanon Recreation Center. Mt. Lebanon residency is not required to attend.
Check-in is at 10:30 a.m. At 11 is a presentation, “Brain Health As We Age.” Lunch is at noon, and the movie starts at approximately 1 p.m.

Open house
Concordia of the South Hills will host an educational session and open house from 1 to 3 p.m. May 19 at its campus, 1300 Bower Hill Road, Mt. Lebanon.
A brief session, “How To Choose A Retirement Community,” will be presented at 1 p.m., followed by tours of apartments and common areas. Refreshments will be served in the Harmony Room on the ground floor of the community.

Lions fish fry
Bethel Park Lions Club will hold a spring fish fry from 4 to 7 p.m. May 24 at Lions Park.
The menu includes fried fish sandwich, baked fish or shrimp with french fries or macaroni and cheese, coleslaw and a drink for $11 per person. Children’s hot dog meals are $5. Available for purchase from Rita’s Italian Ice will be individual ices, quarts of ice and frozen cookies.
Lunch will be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and takeout is available. Bethel Park Lionesses will be offering desserts for sale. Plastic bags and brooms will also be available for purchase.
