Speech and debate team earns top marks

The Upper St. Clair High School speech and debate team placed first overall and in debate as well as second in speech at the Sterner Steel City Classic held Jan. 5, at Central Catholic High School. Fifteen high schools from throughout the Pittsburgh region competed in the tournament. Several individuals and teams earned high honors at the day-long event. They included: Congressional Debate – Caroline Wolfe (1st place, Outstanding Speaker); Impromptu – Rhea Punjabi, (2nd place) and Brandon Walker (5th place); Duo Interpretation – Amelia White and Ellen Duff (2nd place); Extemporaneous Speaking – Paarth Shankar (2nd place), Hridhay Reddy (3rd place), Rushi Kulkarni (6th place); Dramatic Interpretation – Mayka Chaves (2nd place), Bryce Keating (5th place); Humorous Interpretation – Riwk Sen (2nd place), Maddie Nolen (5th place); Prose/Poetry – Risha Mahajan (1st place), Annika Chaves (4th place); Original Oratory – Neha Patel (3rd place); Lincoln-Douglas Debate – Claire Chen (3rd place), Sunny Chai (5th place); Public Forum Debate – Mathena Jenka and Anika Sinha (2nd place), Dina Leyzarovich and Meghan Joon (3rd place), Dev Patel and Ashley Eichberg (5th place); Parliamentary Debate – Arushi Khaitan, Eshita Chhajlani and Mallika Matharu (1st place) and Ayush Sharma, Chand Vadalia and Basir Khan (3rd place).
