USC senior earns Girl Scout Gold Award
Alexis Feldman, a senior at Upper St. Clair High School, has been honored with the highest award in Girl Scouting – the Gold Award. Presented by the Girl Scouts of Western Pennsylvania, the award recognizes girls in grades 9-12 who demonstrate extraordinary leadership through sustainable and measurable Take Action projects that address important community needs. Alexis is vice president of Student Council, mini-THON sponsorship executive, co-president of the Multicultural Club, co-president of Tri-M Honors Music Society, Pantheon Choir treasurer, Girls Reaching Out Worldwide treasurer, and a lead and dance captain for the spring musical. As a Girl Scout member for 13 years, Alexis is a Girl Scout Ambassador. She was supported in her Gold Award effort by Dan Beck, Lorie Davis, Kate Mayberry, Paarth Shankar, Brooke Tarcson and the USCHS Student Wellness Steering Committee. Her Gold Award project began in January 2018 and was completed January 2019. Alexis Feldman’s primary goal for her fellow high school students was to create a space focused on personal wellness. She helped organize two successful in-school yoga classes. Thanks to a positive feedback survey that Alexis administered, a monthly schedule of yoga classes has now been implemented at the high school. While her initial goal to create a wellness space inside the high school was not immediately achieved, through hard work, there are now plans in place to build this space. Alexis has helped establish the “Student Wellness Steering Committee,” a leadership group comprised of a few students from each grade. The committee has met with administrators, teachers, parents, and local wellness experts to help determine the vision of her goal. By implementing wellness practices early on in life, students can be better equipped to lead healthy lifestyles down the road. By working closely with student council, Alexis expanded the wellness initiative across the entire student body. Her future plans include attending college for international studies.
