Shredding event

Mt. Lebanon will host a shredding event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 25 at the municipal public works facility, 1250 Lindendale Drive, off of Cedar Boulevard. Iron Mountain Secure Shredding will provide the service.

Strawberry festival

Peters Creek Evangelical Presbyterian Church invites the community to its Strawberry Festival from 6 to 8:30 p.m. June 14 at 905 E. McMurray Road, Peters Township (St. David’s Episcopal Parish Hall).

On the menu are fried chicken, roast beef, sides and strawberry shortcake with ice cream. Featured are children’s crafts, the Bounce House Jazz Band and a theme basket raffle. Call the church office at 724-941-6210 for tickets. Adult are $10; children 12 and under, $5; and senior citizens, $8. Dessert only is $4. Tickets will also be sold at the door. Proceeds benefit church missions.

Concordia open house

Concordia of the South Hills will host an educational session and open house from 1 to 3 p.m. May 19 at its campus, 1300 Bower Hill Road, Mt. Lebanon.

A brief session, “How To Choose A Retirement Community,” will be presented at 1 p.m., followed by tours of apartments and common areas. USC Water Safety Day

A Water Safety Day will be held at 6 p.m. May 24 at the Upper St. Clair Community and Recreation Center. Children age 3-13 years old and their parents are encouraged to attend and learn some essential information for keeping everyone safe in and around water. The program will be held in the classroom and in the water, so bring your bathing suits. The event is free to attend. For more information, contact 412-221-1099.

General AUP meeting and program is at 1:30 p.m. May 19 at Rodef Shalom in Oakland. Senior Justice Advocate Cyndie Carioli of the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office will present “Senior Justice,” addressing scams and criminal activity directed at seniors. Admission is $5 or free if bringing a snack. Those interested in joining AUP are welcome to attend.

Open house

Shear Talent is holding an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. May 19 at South Park Shops, Bethel Park. There will be family entertainment, door prizes and special offers on services.

Horses with Hope

The Horses with Hope Fundraiser will be held at 4:30 p.m. June 8 during the 151st running of the Belmont Stakes Event at South Hills Country Club. Lions fish fry

Bethel Park Lions Club will hold a spring fish fry from 4 to 7 p.m. May 24 at Lions Park.

The menu includes fried fish sandwich, baked fish or shrimp with french fries or macaroni and cheese, coleslaw and a drink for $11 per person. Children’s hot dog meals are $5. Available for purchase from Rita’s Italian Ice will be individual ices, quarts of ice and frozen cookies. Lunch will be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and takeout is available. Bethel Park Lionesses will be offering desserts for sale. Plastic bags and brooms will also be available for purchase. Proceeds benefit Lions charities.

Evening of Percussion

Mt. Lebanon Percussion will present its 35th annual “An Evening of Percussion” concert series at 7:30 p.m. May 23 and 24 (dessert silent auction at intermission); 1 p.m. May 25 (one-hour family concert); and 7 p.m. May 25 (free cookie reception to follow).

The concert features not only the nationally recognized concert ensembles, but also African and Brazilian groups, keyboard and drum set ensembles and the drum line and pit. Tickets are available online at www.MTLPercussion.com/tickets. All concerts are at the Mt. Lebanon High School Fine Arts Theater.

Summer Dance Camps

Spencer Family Y, Bethel Park, will offer the following dance camps:

n Prince and Princess Dance Camp for children ages 3-5 includes a dance class, craft and time for a snack from home, plus a creative play. Session I runs June 17 and 24; Session II runs July 11 and 18. Both sessions are from 10:30 a.m. to noon and are $30 per session.

n Swan Lake Camp for ages 6-12 will teach students ballet, jazz and character dances. A craft of tutu construction will also be part of this camp. Session I runs June 20 and 27; Session II runs July 11 and 18. Both sessions are from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and are $40 per session. Space is limited. n Bethel Park Public Library will host a special event featuring a Pittsburgh-based author at 7 p.m. May 29.

Roselyn Wilkinson will discuss the subject of her book, “It’s Good to Be Queen: Every Woman’s Pocket Guide to Financial Sovereignty.” A certified financial planner, Wilkinson is president of MD&A Financial Management Co. and a registered representative and investment advisory associate of Berthel Fisher & Co. Financial Services. She is a graduate of Bucknell University with a master of business administration from the University of Pittsburgh. She is on the board of the Women & Girls Foundation and actively supports other women professionals and women-owned businesses.

The board of trustees of the library announces its regular meetings for 2019-20: May 21, June 18, July 16, Sept. 17, Oct. 22 and Nov. 19; in 2020, Jan. 21, Feb. 18, March 17 and April 21. All meetings are held at 7 p.m., with the exception of Oct. 22, and are held at 7 p.m. in Public Meeting Room B.

At 1 p.m. May 20, Speaker is Rich Venezia, owner of the Pittsburgh-based genealogy research firm Rich Roots Genealogy. Presented by the Mt. Lebanon Genealogy Society.

At 7 p.m., Monday, May 20 The Write or Die writing and critique group presents a panel of New York Times bestselling authors, local reporters, book store managers and editors. This is a unique opportunity for aspiring authors to speak directly with individuals working within the world of publishing. About issues such as getting an agent, what publishers want, and how to get your book into bookstores. Moderator J.D. Barker is the international best-selling author of numerous novels, including “Forsaken” and “The Fourth Monkey.”

At 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 21 Little Wings of Hope, a nonprofit that provides assistance and encouragement to young adults and their families as they work through alcohol/drug addiction treatment, sponsors this talk about the neuroscience of addiction. Speakers are Antoine Douaihy and Jody Glance, both doctors from the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Psychiatry.

CLASSES

Country line dancing

Country line dancing is held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays at VFW Post 764, 460 Valley Brook Road, Peters Township. Beginners are welcome. For more information, call Bonnie at 724-746-1222.

Divorce workshop

A divorce workshop for women will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 8 at Southminster Presbyterian Church, 799 Washington Road in Mt. Lebanon.

The four-hour workshop will explore the legal, financial, and emotional issues of divorce to educate on what to expect and how to prepare. Attendees will gain a greater understanding of how to get through the divorce process with the least amount of cost, conflict and collateral damage.

Materials fee is $35 per person and pre-registration is necessary by June 6th to Donna at 724-493-9695.

Dementia education session

Pittsburgh Mercy Parish Nurse and Health Ministry Program will present “Spiritual Care of the Elderly with Dementia,” an educational offering focusing on understanding dementia and the collection of symptoms that are caused by disorders affecting the brain, June 6 at Christ United Methodist Church, Conference Room A105, 44 Highland Road, Bethel Park

Registration is at 9:30 a.m., and the session is from 10 a.m. to noon. Enter church building door No. 2 under portico.
