Education session, open house

Women’s club to hold meeting

The Ruthfred Acres Woman’s Club will hold its first meeting and program of the club year at 6 p.m. Sept. 10 at the Schoolhouse Arts Center in Bethel Park. Bethel Woman’s Club to Meet

The Bethel Woman’s Club will be holding its first meeting of the 2019-20 year Sept. 18 at South Hills Elks Lodge, 2789 South Park Road, Bethel Park. The local chapter of the Women’s Army Corp Veterans Association — Army Women United in Pittsburgh is looking for veterans to become members. Cooking classes

Kids in the Kitchen Cooking, for junior chefs ages 4 to 7 and master chefs ages 8-11, will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Thursdays beginning in September at Chabad of the South Hills, 1701 McFarland Road, Mt. Lebanon.

Each class includes a cooking segment in which youngsters will learn kitchen techniques and taste new foods, plus hands-on learning about Jewish topics and one-on-one Hebrew Alef-Bet and reading. The schedule is as follows:

Adult Interest Center

The Adult Interest Center at Southminster Presbyterian Church, 799 Washington Road, Mt. Lebanon, will begin its 45th year of operation in September.

The center, which is open to people ages 55 and older, meets at 11 a.m. Fridays in the church’s fellowship hall. Entertainment is featured, with an optional catered lunch for $7.

South Hills Coin Club

Fish fry

The Bethel Park Lions Club will hold a fish fry from 4 to 7 p.m. Sept. 13 at Lions Park.

The menu includes a fried fish sandwich, baked fish or deep-fried butterfly shrimp with french fries or macaroni and cheese, coleslaw and a drink for $11. Children’s dinners of hot dog, french fries and drink are $5.

Lunch will be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and includes fried fish sandwich, french fries, coleslaw and drink for $11. Take out also is available.

Bethel Park Lioness will offer desserts for sale. Plastic garbage bags and brooms will be available for purchase. All proceeds benefit Lions charities.

Soccer skills competition

South Hills Elks Lodge 2213 in Bethel Park will hold a soccer shooting skills contest for boys and girls under age 14 from noon to 2:30 p.m. Sept. 14 at Bethel Park High School.

The competition is open to youngsters in all communities. They do not have to be a member of a soccer organization or Elks family member to participate.

The highest scores of the boy and girl shooter in each age group will advance to the Elks West District shoot. Winners then will advance to the Pennsylvania Elks State shoot in State College, and winners there will represent Pennsylvania in the regional, multi-state competition.

Advance registration is requested. Onsite registration will be accepted as time and positions are available. Proof of age is required at registration.

Square dancing

Worship services

Life Recovery, confidential Christian recovery group for any addiction, open meeting, is held at 7 p.m. Wednesdays. Family Rescue, support and healing for family members and loved ones negatively impacted by addiction, also meets at 7 p.m. then separates into their own small group.

A new session of Grief Share meets from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursdays beginning Sept. 12 or Fridays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. beginning Sept. 13, and runs 12 weeks. Grief Share is a safe, caring place to come and share your loss with people who understand and want to offer comfort and encouragement during a very difficult time in your life. Rosh Hashanah farmers market

An interactive Rosh Hashanah farmers market, organized by Chabad of South Hills in Mt. Lebanon, is scheduled for Sept. 22 at the South Hills JCC, 345 Kane Blvd., Scott Township.

As youngsters go from booth to booth, they will explore the holiday’s culinary themes with unique recipes: round artisan challah, apple mocktails, carrot cake pops, and a holiday fruit salad. At each booth, kids use personalized tote bags to collect recipe cards that they can turn into a special holiday keepsake.

Support group meeting

The first of three monthly Washington County Autism and Special Education Support Group meetings is scheduled for 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 25 at St. David’s Episcopal Church, 905 E. McMurray Road, Peters Township.

“Understanding the Evaluation and IEP Process” is the September topic, featuring a presentation by the Parent Education and Advocacy Leadership Center to educate parents and families with children who have disabilities and special health care needs.

Support series

The St. Bernard/Our Lady of Grace Parish partners in Mt. Lebanon/Scott/Dormont will conduct a bereavement support series for those who have experienced he loss of a loved one in recent months or years.

The sessions are free, open to the public and provide a safe space to talk with others who are grieving. The group will be facilitated by Paula Elliott and held at St. Bernard Church, Fontenay Center, 311 Washington Road, Mt. Lebanon.

Civic engagement classes

Allegheny County Library Association and PublicSource will host a series of ‘Citizen Toolkit’ classes in libraries through September, October and November as part of a broader role libraries are playing within our communities. ‘Fake News and Information Literacy Workshops’ and ‘Power of the Pen: Getting public attention on your issues’ stem from ACLA’s recent $250,000 PA Department of Education grant focused on civic literacy and engagement throughout Allegheny County.

Mt. Lebanon Recreation Senior will offer a luncheon and movie matinee for seniors and their adult guests.

The event, which will be held at Mt. Lebanon Rec Center, 2nd Floor, Room A, will be held Sept. 17. The schedule of events is as follows:

12 p.m. Hot lunch buffet and 50/50 raffle;

1- 2:30 p.m.: movie on the big screen.

Craft show

South Park Women’s Club has moved its craft show from the Home Economics Building in South Park to a new location this year. The organization’s 26th annual craft show will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 12 at Broughton Volunteer Fire Hall, Cochran Mill Road Pittsburgh, PA 15236 in South Park Township.

Many new crafters will be in attendance. More than 50 crafters will display their work at this show. There will be a 50/50 raffle, Chinese auction, bake good sale and delicious lunch items for available for purchase. All the great crafts on display are available for purchase. Let our crafters help you to start your holiday shopping. Admission is free.

Bowling fundraiser

Horses with Hope, Inc. is holding its annual Bowling Fundraiser from 12-3 p.m. Oct. 27. at Meadows Lanes Bowling, 210 Racetrack Road, North Strabane.

The cost to attend the fundraiser is $30 per person or $150 for a lane of 6 bowlers. Included in the entry fee is food, refreshments and bowling. A silent auction and 50/50 raffles will be available.

A car cruise will be held Sept. 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at John McMillan Presbyterian Church. Registration will be offered the day of the event, which will include food, a DJ, crafters, vendors, a Chinese auction and 50/50 raffle.

Autumn Food Fair

Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church Ladies Philoptochos Society will host an Autumn Food Fair, from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. October 2-4 in the community center at 123 Gilkeson Road, Mt. Lebanon. The profits support the philanthropic efforts of the society. A menu of traditional Greek favorites will be served, including gyros, spanakopita, moussaka, pastitsio and many others. Band festival

The Mt. Lebanon High School Blue Devil Marching Band is scheduled to host its 25th annual Festival of Bands at 7 p.m. Sept. 21 at Mt. Lebanon High School stadium. Bethel Park Public Library will hold the following programs:

• Almost Kindergarten program will be held at 1 p.m. or 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 3-26. This one-hour class will teach kindergarten-based concepts and social skills and is intended for those children entering kindergarten in the fall of 2020. This class will be taught by a certified teacher and optional assessment is available throughout the year. Registration is limited. • How to Pay for College program will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 29. Kim McCurdy, a Higher Education Access Partner for PHEAA, will present information on the financial aid application process, what types of aid might be available for students, and strategies to start thinking about affordability before your students get ready to apply for post-secondary school admission. • Mt. Lebanon Genealogy Society — 1 p.m. Sept. 16.

Speaker Sierra Green presents “An Archivist’s Guide to Genealogical Research at the Heinz History Center.” Learn to uncover the individual voices of ancestors that are hidden in records of employment, personal family history, organizations, local government, funeral homes and churches and synagogues. This session will also provide guidance on how to harness collections in order to traverse time and recreate your ancestor’s historical setting in Western Pennsylvania.

• Homeless Identities: Walk on By — 7 p.m. Sept. 17.

Jay Poliziani, director of Northside Common Ministries, will discuss the sponsored art exhibit “Walk on By,” which showcases posters, pictures, videos, illustrations and comics by 11 participating artists who documented the everyday lives of local homeless, focusing on the lack of visibility many of them face. The exhibit will be on display at Mt. Lebanon Public Library in February 2020.

• Flu shot clinic – 9:30 to 11 a.m. Sept. 6 and 3 to 6 p.m. Sept. 19.

• An Evening with Amy Stewart — 7 p.m. Sept. 19.

Amy Stewart’s Kopp Sisters novels, starting with “Girl Waits with a Gun,” are based on the true story of three extraordinary women: Constance, Norma and Fleurette Kopp. In 2012, Stewart stumbled across a 1914 newspaper article about them and went on to uncover their amazing history through genealogical archives, court records, old newspapers and interviews with family members. From their story, she is writing a series about the Kopp sisters and their adventures in crime fighting. Stewart will share photographs and stories about these extraordinary women and the fascinating historical background that shaped their world 100 years ago. City Books will be at the event with copies of Amy’s books for sale. Her new book, “Kopp Sisters on the March” will be available for purchase at the event.

• The Volunteer: The True Story of the Resistance Hero who Infiltrated Auschwitz — 2 p.m. Sept. 22.

Jack Fairweather is a former war reporter in Iraq and Afghanistan and the author of “A War of Choice” and “The Good War.” He has served as the Daily Telegraph’s Baghdad bureau chief, and as a video journalist for the Washington Post in Afghanistan. His war coverage has won a British Press Award and an Overseas Press Club award citation. Jack will discuss his new book, “The Volunteer: The True Story of the Resistance Hero who Infiltrated Auschwitz.” Taking place in Nazi-occupied Poland, it follows the story of Polish underground operative Witold Pilecki, who volunteers for a secret mission to infiltrate Auschwitz. Completely erased from the historical record by Poland’s Communist government, Pilecki remains almost unknown to the world — until now.

South Park

Friends of South Park Township Library will be holding its first meeting of their new fiscal year at 7 p.m. Sept. 17 in the township library. Members and anyone interested in the “Friends” are welcome to attend. At this meeting, the Friends hope to present Library Director Amanda DeKnight a check from their past year fundraisers. Community Day will be discussed as well as other Friends’ business.

Support South Park Township Library by joining us for an evening with author, Jean Marie Laskas at 7 p.m. Sept. 18. Ms Laskas will discuss her book “To Obama: With Love, Joy, Anger and Hope.” Tickets are $30 which include a signed copy of the book and refreshments.
