Miller wins section golf title

Ben Miller fired a 3-over-par 74 at the South Hills Country Club and won the Section 6 title.

A sophomore, Miller was one of five Peters Township golfers to qualify with a target score of 82 or better for the first round the WPIAL Class AAA Championships to be held Sept. 27 at Champion Lakes Golf Course.

Miller will be joined by teammates Colton Lusk (75), Austin Malley (75), Nick Wetzel (77) and Nick Haught (77) in the tournament as the foursome finished third through sixth in the sectional.

Mt. Lebanon’s Callan Wilcox earned runner-up honors. A senior, he carded a 75.

Bethel Park’s Dom Nerone finished eighth overall with an 81 while Canon-McMillan’s Braden Gerchow shot an 82 to make the final cut in ninth position.

The WPIAL Class AAA boys’ individual golf championships will be held Oct. 6 at the Allegheny Country Club in Sewickley.

As a team, the Indians clinched their 20th straight WPIAL playoff appearance when they defeated Thomas Jefferson, 187-198, on the Lakeside Front 9 at Butler’s Golf Course.

Griffin Hansberry and Austin Malley shot par 36s while Nick Wetzel finished with a 37. Colton Lusk and Nick Haught each carded a 39.

Coupled wins against Baldwin, 191-238, Mt. Lebanon, 189-205, Bethel Park, 205-215, and Canon-McMillan, 185-218, the Indians raised their overall record to 15-0 and wrapped up an undefeated season (10-0) in Section 6 action.

Against the Highlanders, Lusk fired a par 36 while Wetzel followed with a 37. Malley and Ben Miller both finished with 39s while Haught contributed a 40 for the Indians.

Against Lebo, Lusk and Wetzel both carded a 1-under-par 35. Hansberry followed with a 38. Malley and Haught finished with 40 and 41 respectively.

For the Blue Devils, Callan Wilcox fired a 38 while Jack Hartman and Owen Snyder finished with 40s. Charlie Mistretta (41) and Ethan Scott (46) completed the scoring for Lebo.

Against BP, Lusk, Hansberry, Wetzel, Miller and Malley all shot 41s to lead the Indians.

Against the Big Macs, Hansberry fired a 35 while Lusk supplied a 36. Malley (37), Haught (38) and Miller (39) completed the scoring for the Indians.

The quest for the Class AAA team title begins Oct. 11 with qualifying tournaments at Beaver Valley Golf Club in Patterson Heights and Duck Hollow Golf Club in Uniontown. The top teams advance to the team championships Oct. 13 at Cedarbrook Golf Course in Belle Vernon.

Malosh winsMarissa Malosh earned medalist honors during the Section 2-AAA girls’ golf championship match. The South Fayette senior, who is the defending WPIAL champion, fired a 69 at the Butler’s Golf Course to claim the section crown.

Peters Township advanced four golfers to the first round of the district finals to be played Sept. 26 at Youghiogheny Country Club in McKeesport. Scores from that match will carry over to the WPIAL championships to be held Oct. 3 at Valley Brook Country Club in McMurray.

Elli Benson took third with a 75 while Brooke Vowcheck finished fifth overall with a 78. Amelia and Sophia Severns placed seventh and eighth respectively with 82 and 83 marks.

Mt. Lebanon advanced two golfers to the first round of the WPIAL tournament. Anna Kushnir carded a 79 for sixth place while Madeline Zerega shot under the target score of 89, finishing with an 87 for 10th place.

SF’s Ally Brennan also qualified. The senior scored 84 for ninth position.

In Class AA action, Emily O’Bara scored eighth place. The Seton LaSalle sophomore shot a 90 to finish under the target score of 96 at the Section 2 match played at Del-Mar Golf Course.
