Lestini leads list of area qualifiers

Luke Lestini earned medalist honors at the Section 7-AAA championships and led the list of area qualifiers to compete in the WPIAL semifinals set for Sept. 23. The South Fayette senior carded a 68 at Lindenwold Golf Course.

James Cavrak joined his teammate in the semifinals. The SF sophomore shot an 80.

Golfers needed to reach or go under the target score of 82 to advance in the WPIAL tournament.

Upper St. Clair advanced four golfers to the semifinals. Jack Urban was the leader, carding a 72. Scott Jordan (76), Nathan Piatt (79) and Keith Kerber (82) also qualified for the Panthers.

Peters Township had the most qualifiers with six.

Christian Schreiber fired a 75 in advance of Andrew Poon’s 76. Nick Luniewski and Ellian Ascencio finished with 77s. Logan Shaw and Mason Takacs posted scores of 80 and 82.

In the Section 6-AAA qualifier held at Butler’s Golf Course, Myles Hamel earned medalist honors. The Mt. Lebanon senior carded a 74.

His teammate, Matt Dyke shot a 78, and Bethel Park’s John Harmon with a 79 qualified for the semifinals, meeting the target score of 80.

Semifinal qualifiers will be held at Willowbrook and Hannastown golf clubs advance to the WPIAL championships set for Oct. 1 at Fox Chapel Golf Club. Tee times start at 8 a.m.

In Class AA, Jacob Verner qualified out of Section 9. The Seton LaSalle senior fired a 73 at Rolling Acres Golf Course and finished third overall.

South Park’s Stone Ellis also qualified. At the Section 4 championships, the senior posted a 79 at Chippewa Golf Course.

The WPIAL AA individual boys championships will be held Sept. 26 at Allegheny Country Club.

The WPIAL AAA and AA girls individual championships will be held Oct. 2 at Diamond Run Golf Club. Tee times start at 8:30 a.m.

USC remained undefeated in section, raising its record to 11-0 with a 197-223 victory against Bethel Park.

Piatt and Jones each carded 37s while Scott Jordan followed with a 38. Urban and Kerber finished with 42 and 43 scores respectively.

PT beats OC

Peters Township defeated Oakland Catholic, 175-197, in girls golf.

Ella McRoberts led the way with a low-score of 40. Allison Poon (47), Delaney Kern (42) and Morgan Byers (46) followed.

For the Eagles, Tara Loughran fired a 40. Maggie Frank and Delaney McHugh followed with 50s while Ellie Kissing shot a 57.

The Indians also defeated Bethel Park to remain undefeated at 10-0 in the section and 12-0 overall. McRoberts and Poon both carded 39s in the victory.

PT clinches

Peters Township clinched its 17th consecutive playoff appearance with a win against Trinity, 19-2-221, at Lone Pine Golf Course.

With the win, the Indians improved to 8-1 in Section 7-AAA and 12-2 overall.

Andrew Poon shot the low score of 38 followed by Christian Schreiber and Nick Luniewski, both with 39s. Ellian Ascencio and Mason Takacs finished with 40 and 41, respectively.

The Indians look to avenge their lone section loss when they host rival Upper St. Clair at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 26 at Valley Brook Country Club.
